Occasionally, Facebook will let me know that a friend has marked his or herself "safe" after an earthquake, a terrorist attack, or a hurricane.

As we face a new year, can I encourage to mark yourself "safe" in all the ways that matter?

Sometimes I face the new year with a bit of fear. Will God be there as He has been in the past? Sometimes I face it with some cynicism. God, you didn't really fix that thing I've been praying about. Are you even listening?

Last night, one of my girls had some pre-new-year's panic. All of sudden leaving 2018 behind felt like leaving something warm and familiar and she wasn't ready.

I'm in the middle of Dallas Willard's exposition on the sermon on the mount (The Divine Conspiracy**), and in the chapter on Jesus' teaching on anxiety, Willard sums up Jesus' words:

"'We have no reason ever to be anxious.' 'This present world is a perfectly safe place for us to be.'"

Perfectly safe. Really? That seems a bit rosy, don't you think?

The world can seem so scary to me. At any time I could be marked "not safe" on Facebook!

Because I'm a news scroller, I know lots of ways that people and kids die. Then there's global warming and the threat of nuclear war. I've gardened enough to know that my family would not survive some post-apocalyptic nightmare world if we were forced to feed ourselves off the random vegetable I coax out of the dirt.

"'We have no reason ever to be anxious.' 'This present world is a perfectly safe place for us to be.'"

Jesus doesn't tell me not to worry because it's cute and He's naive. He doesn't pipe in with  pious sayings as we pat him on the head and say, "That's nice, Jesus."

No. He's laid out a way for us to build our lives on the rock of His teaching (Matthew 8:24-27). Peace is possible in a walking, working, growing relationship with Him--the one who hold all things together (Colossians 1:17).

Even in the crazy storms, I mark myself self:
✔️ saved, not condemned for my sins
✔️ filled with the Holy Spirit
✔️ eternal life starting now and continuing to eternity (i.e. death can't hold me or my loved ones)
✔️ loved and cared for deeply and personally
✔️ called to a purpose--to be like Jesus
✔️ equipped with a way to live (the Word)

My son (who turns four on Monday) has been having bad dreams. The little felt figures we use for our advent calendar popped out and terrorized him in one dream. I took the calendar down after Christmas so he'd stop giving it the evil eye and shuddering every time he passed. As I took out the figure of Mary, he said, "She was the leader."

super scary Advent calendar
So I pray for my little buddy before he sleeps. I tell him God is close. I tell him God is like a warm, heavy blanket made of sunshine that wraps him up and keeps him safe. And I pray for him to have good dreams.

And it works--God works.

"Mama, tell me about the warm blanket," he reminded me last night.

Friends, if panic starts to set in, if the weight of all your to-do's or undones burdens you, tell yourself about the warm blanket of God's love for you. Mark yourself safe in Him.

"For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Rom 8:38-39 ESV)

Marked safe in this new year + a safe phone screensaver

Sometimes anxiety can be a lonely experience. "What are you worried about?" my husband will often ask.

"I don't know. It's just everything all at once," I usually say.  Anyone else with me?

It can be lonely to not even be able to express an internal struggle.

I was worshipping with my church family on Sunday and struggling with some anxiety, finding it a hard to sing out and focus. I think God said to me, "I know. I see it."

I am so blessed to have the sweetest friends and family in my life. They listen and pray for me. They reply to my SOS texts. They share my burdens. Just their listening alone is a sweet gift and invariably lightens my load immediately.

I hope you have such sisters in Christ. But even in those lonely moments when you feel alone, God says, "I know. I see it."

One theme for me this year is "faith over fear," so today I'm sharing with you a sweet little screensaver made from my watercolor over the hymn, "Blessed Assurance" by Fanny Crosby and a corresponding coloring page (look for the original painting + prints in the shop soon!).

I hope you can use them to walk in "blessed assurance," continually calling upon your God who sees you with compassion (Psalm 103:13), and choose faith in His steadfast love over fear.

"But I call to God, and the LORD will save me. Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me." (Psa 55:16-18 ESV)

Faith over fear screensaver + coloring page

"Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:5-7 ESV)

Sometimes I describe anxiety like a train. It starts with a thought or a belief that, unchecked, begins to roll along briskly on the track of my mind. As it begins to gain speed, it gets harder and harder to slow it down.

To slow down the train, I have to look at what's feeding the engine, but that process can be scary and intimidating for me. Sometimes it feels easier to keep chug-chug-chugging along.

As Edward Welch points out in his book on anxiety (see my resources page if you're interested), we often hear God's instructions to "fear not" as a scolding. You should know better, do better, be better. I'm so tired of your struggles. But Welch says that we need to hear "do not fear" and "do not be anxious" as words from the heart of a good, good father.

It's a little like my three-year-old in the car:  "Mom, do you know how to get there?"

"Yes, Silas, don't worry. Mommy knows where we're going."

Or my daughter before Christmas or her birthday: "Mom, are you sure you got me a present? I'm really worried that you'll forget."

"Yes, sweetie. I love you and I haven't forgotten to get you something special."

My love and care for my kids is imperfect, but God's love isn't, even when the evidence of it is hard for us to see at times.

He is attentive.
He acts on our behalf.
He comforts.
He guides.
He speaks.

That's why He can say, "Be anxious for nothing."

If you follow along with my art on Instagram, you know I've been painting a lot this new year and experimenting with watercolor on old book pages. I've used my paintings to make a screensaver for your phone. You can choose from blue or pink by clicking on either image below and saving to your phone!

Anxious for Nothing Philippians 4:6 Screensaver

Hello friends!

I've been a little quiet around here, I know, but I wanted to pop in briefly and share this Scripture with you that has been ministering to me:

"When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul." Psalm 91:14

I don't know if you've ever felt the overwhelming weight of anxiety and fear. I sure have. Slowly God is leading me through, teaching me discern between the voice of fear and the voice of faith. Teaching me stillness versus hurry and worry.

"But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me." Psalm 131:2

These are not simple issues. They require a God-sized rescue and consolation of our souls.

One day, I'd love to share more of the ways God is growing me, but for now I am storing these things up in my heart.

"Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what He has done for my soul." Psalm 66:16

Also, this song and this song have been sweet encouragement.

Today's printable Bible verse coloring page is from Psalm 94:19. The ornaments in this coloring page were made with the iOrnament app, which the girls and I are loving! You can download your page by clicking on the images below (one in English and one in Spanish)!*

PRAYING the Word
Jesus, in all my distress and anxiety, I cry out to You, the only Comforter and all-wise Counselor. You know me. You see me. Your consolations cheer my weighted soul, and I am blessed when I put my hope in you (Psalm 146:5). Help me quiet and still my soul, content to be under your faithful care.

My anxiety and Your consolations + Psalm 94:19 Bible Coloring Page in English and Spanish

With the start of the school year, life has gotten a bit busier for us. My to-do's are all small things, but in total I tend to react in anxiety and find myself sorting through them at 3 am, unable to sleep.

So this month's screensaver is a reminder for me and you to pause and seek the presence of the Lord.

I love this verse:
"Seek the LORD and his strength;
seek his presence continually
!" Psalm 105:4
 And this one:
"Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you." (1Peter 5:6-7 ESV)
Yes, sisters, cast those anxieties down. Humble yourself. They are too big for you to carry and besides, HE CARES for you.

I pray these things:
Show me what I should do today.
Show me what doesn't have to be done right now.
Lord, show me when my fear of disappointing others or doing something poorly is creating an unnecessary burden.
Lord, teach me to rest in your provision and your help.
Help me remember that your presence will be there tomorrow too.

Pause and pray screensaver

Jeremiah 17:7-8 Bible verse coloring page

If you're an American like me and at all paying attention, you were probably up late last night watching the election results roll in--to your delight, dismay, or bewilderment depending on your point of view (and if you're grieving today, I'm truly sorry, and please take your time processing).

(This reminds me of how there is a massive construction project carving up a whole hill down the street from our house--a new "luxury living" university student housing development called "The Retreat." We drive by often and my five-year-old says "Oh, look at the destruction!" My baby boy says, "WOW" to all the big diggers. The elderly man now living in a formerly quiet neighborhood just shakes his head. A lot depends on your point of view, I suppose, and I respect my friends and their real concerns on both sides.)

We all put our hope in something or someone. Some event. Some goal. Some person. Some ideal.

If your hope isn't in a political party, maybe it's your particular brand of doing church. Or maybe your great hopes for your children or your career. Or maybe it's in a friendship or marriage or family.

In my experience, those things just don't deliver consistently.

My dad reminded me of this verse from Jeremiah this morning as we talked over last night's events:

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit." (Jeremiah 17:7-8 ESV)

Spanish Bible verse coloring page

There is nothing and no one better, friends. Your leaders, your political party allegiances, your friends, your family, your spouse. They cannot be where you sink your roots. They are not an ever-flowing river. They do not drive out fear and anxiety.

"Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, 'Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'"" (John 7:38 ESV)

Whatever the "climate" where we're planted, we can bear fruit, fruit born of the fullness of the Spirit in us (Galatians 5:22, Colossians 2:10--illustrated HERE).

Yes, things will still hurt and disappoint and perplex us, but they don't have to capture us with fear, dry us up, or move us.

Let's sink our roots down deep friends and be "oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified" (Isaiah 61:3 ESV).

Let's be known for clearly being "the Lord's," not the right's or left's, or in-between's.

PRAYING the Word
God, we are thirsty for you. We need a hope that is unchanging today. Help us put our trust and all our hope in You. Help us bear fruit to your glory. Help us be a light in our neighborhoods, our schools, our workplaces, our homes, our cities, and our nation(s).

QUESTIONS to consider:
1. What kind of things have been "your trust," but have disappointed you?
2. How can you daily practice putting your trust in the LORD?
3. Are you fearful and anxious today? What clues are fear and anxiety sending you about where your hope is placed?

Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow! + As a tree printable coloring page

Psalm 139:7-19 printable bible verse coloring page
I have written about fear before (here and here and here, and here), and here I am again.

We get into the car and I fear that we'll get into an accident. A friend of a friend has cancer. What if that happened to me? What if we go to war and my son gets drafted one day (currently reading a World War 1 novel)?

Little nagging fears, just sparks really.

As I write, a wildfire still burns over 10,000 acres in the Shenandoah National Park just beyond our beautiful valley. It was just a spark 10 days ago.

I know that fears have to be examined, have to be told the truth, have to be extinguished quickly before they become something more harmful.

What do you tell your fears? This is the verse I am thinking of today:
"Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me." Psalm 139:7-10
Even there, YOU are there.

The Psalmist is going into the ring with his fears, naming his "ifs" and proclaiming over them God's unchanging love and presence.

Even there, YOU are there.

I know this presence. He has been there in the darkest moments of my life when I've curled my body around a broken heart. Even there, God's right hand held me. Even when life felt confusing and disappointing. Even there, God has led me. Even when I literally settled on the "uppermost parts of the sea" in a foreign land, God was there.

Bottom line: God's presence is more real than our fears. What is more real to you today?

Today's printable Bible verse coloring page is from Psalm 139:7-10. You can download your page here or by clicking on the image below!*

PRAYING the Word
Thank you that Your presence is my constant. I pray that this truth would be louder than my fears. Assure my friends who are afraid today. Help me point others to the comfort only You give.

QUESTIONS to ask about the verses (and maybe the whole chapter 139):
1. What places does the writer imagine himself going?
2. What never changes wherever he goes?
3. How does the fact of God's presence, His Spirit, comfort you?

I have one more special something for you today! Cyndee at Women's Ministry Toolbox contacted me recently and asked if I'd create a printable Scripture card for her readers! I love when I can come alongside women and give them the visual tools to do the work God has called them to do, so I said yes! Below is the card we created. You can download it here, or click on the image below and you'll be taken to Cyndee's blog post! She's included lots of fun ideas about how to use these cards and others from my shop. What do you think of using it for mother's day??

Even there + Psalm 139 Printable Coloring Page

I remember getting scared of the dark as a little girl. I'd call for my mom, and she'd come and sing a little song based on Philippians 4:8. She hates for anyone to hear her voice, but to me it was the sweetest comfort.
"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." Philippians 4:8
Now I have my own little girl who is occasionally scared of the dark and what's hidden in her closet (especially after a little too much Nancy Drew).

And now I'm all grown up with grown-up fears of my own. What do you do with your fears as an adult when you can't call your mama to come sing over you? Where do you go?

Our baby had the croup a few weeks ago and had that awful barky cough late at night. I lay in bed listening to him trying unsuccessfully to sleep and I began to feel overwhelmed with fearful thoughts. All kinds of things ran through my head and all of a sudden, I was near panic (I've never had a panic attack, but I can begin to imagine it). I had to ask my husband to pray for me.

These fears often grip me. They're mostly about bad things happening to my children, played out in horrid detail in my mind until be body reacts to the fear that feels so real. Some of us live in this constant state of fear of things that might just happen.

Friends, can I tell you that we weren't made to live in such a state of fear? Jesus would have us controlled only by His Spirit and nothing else.
"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1
I've been praying this simple prayer when fears assault:
Jesus, forgive me for thinking about things that are not true. Help me think about things that are true right now.
Not:
What if the baby stops breathing?
Will the ambulance get here fast enough?
Will I have to call and wake up the doctor?
How would I live without my son?

But this:
Yes, the baby is coughing.
He is still breathing.
God's hand is on his life.
God knows the number of his days.
God will help us know what to do to take care of our son.

This prayer is helping me bring my thoughts under Jesus' control. I also pray that God would alert me if there is a real danger and give me a sense if there is something I do need to be alerted to. This has especially helped when my children are sick.

I share these truths with my little girl as I help her bring her fears to Jesus. I can't promise her (or you) that nothing bad will happen. I can only promise her that God will never leave her or forsake her, even if something bad does happen. I teach her about the Holy Spirit who lives in her because she trusts in Jesus.
"Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
These are the words the ailing Moses spoke to the Israelites as they stood on the brink of the promised land once again (after failing to have the courage to take it the first time they were led there). He points them to the "God-ness" of their God, his sovereignty over all things big and scary.

I made this verse into a coloring page for you or for you to share with your kiddos (especially the afraid-of-the-dark ones).  Click here to download the file (usage below*).

Wrestling fears and finding peace + strong and courageous Deuteronomy 31:6 printable coloring page

For those of us who struggle with anxiety, the simplest situations send us into a tailspin of worry. For example, occasionally, I get a phone call or text on Sunday morning saying that someone is unable to serve with the children at church and we need to find a replacement. This used to make me very anxious, but God has been graciously working on my response to situations like these in the last few years.

I'm trying to read through John during my quiet time. Quiet time for me has been difficult to carve out for a long time. Right now, it's before bed since I'm a terrible morning person (and I figure God is happy to meet me any time).

I read this account the other night:
"After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 3 Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples.4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 5 Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 7 Philip answered him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, andwhen he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten." John 6:1-15
I love that Jesus knows exactly what He will do to feed to oncoming crowd, but He takes the opportunity to test Philip and the other disciples. He is always training them to trust Him and know Him better.

The disciples have been walking with Jesus for some time now and have seen him change the water into wine, preach, and heal the sick, but there remains a disconnect between what they have witnessed and what they actively believe and act on in moments of "faith opportunities."

They walk with the bread of life Himself, so simple physical bread should be a snap.
"Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst." John 6:35
But instead of saying, "Jesus, I know you've got this covered. Tell us what to do," the disciples calculate. They think in terms of money and numbers.

They look at what's in front of them instead of WHO is with them.

Instead of shaking his head at their slow-to-believe-hearts, Jesus graciously feeds the needy crowd so they can stick around and hear His teaching.

I too have walked with Jesus and seen him provide again and again, yet the simplest situation can throw me into a dizzying scramble for solutions. Calculations, figuring, planning. I forget that I walk with the Bread of life. I can talk with the Counselor. The Mighty God has my right hand.

Our God comes through greater than we expect, greater than we even know to ask. Whatever situation--small or big--you face today, remember Him. Maybe it's as small as my Sunday morning phone call, or maybe it's a much bigger deal.

Let this be an opportunity to fall on God's faithfulness and exercise your trust in Him. Stop scrambling and instead tell Jesus, "I know you've got this covered. Tell me what to do."

The answer may simply be, "Just watch."

An opportunity to trust

We just returned from vacation happy, but exhausted. As I walked around the house, I saw the many chores filling up the days ahead--the vacuuming, the dishes, the homeschool room that needs to be set up, the laundry, and the poop incident in the tub.

And inside I complained.

As I sat and watched the baby in his high chair after dinner, I felt God gently prompt me to thank Him. Here in front of me was the child I dearly wanted and was graciously given! Here was the child whose birth I worried over--alive and well!

And here I sat in my air-conditioned house that we also prayed for over two years ago--and were graciously given.

The sounds of my TWO other healthy children filled the house. And then there's my husband, a gift given at age 28 when I longed to be married. Almost eight years later, here we are, still married and still growing in grace.

Those are things I can see. What of the huge rescue plan God set forth before creation to make us His own? What of God becoming flesh, giving His blood to make us fit for Him? What of the gift of the Spirit's continual presence and comfort? What of the miracles God is working in my heart as He changes me "from glory to glory"?
"And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit." 2 Corinthians 3:18
I'm in need of a workout in thankfulness! I'm out of shape and suffering for it. Why is it such a battle to be thankful?

I'm reminded of this verse from Romans 1, the chapter that describes our human descent into sin as we push away God's reign:
"For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened." Romans 1:21
Did you catch the part about thankfulness? Our rebellious nature does not want to honor God or give thanks to Him. And even though I love God and He has redeemed me from slavery to sin, my flesh remains, needing to be put to death over and over (Romans 8:13; Colossians 3:5).

I pray and worry over things, and as soon as God comes through, I go on to the next worry. Now that I have a healthy baby, I worry about keeping him alive. Now that we've returned safely from our road trip, I'm onto the next fear.

When will my heart ever be grateful to my Provider if I keep this up?

When will I finally rest in the knowledge of His goodness?

For He is good after all. And He promises that He works all things for the good of those who love Him. But do we have eyes to see this good?

Consider this verse:
"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of His son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers." Romans 8:28-29
Could it be that if we loved God more and embraced what He calls "good" and HIS purposes for us--being conformed to the image of Jesus--"all things" in life would be fodder for thanksgiving?

What if God's "good" for us involves a certain amount of pressure, for what thing is "conformed" to another image without pressure? Can we be thankful even under pressure today knowing that it makes us more like the Son?

When we let God define our good, and give Him thanks, our hearts become positioned to see EVERY BLESSING.

God, forgive me for missing the beautiful view of your faithful love, your faithful conforming, your faithful provisions, and your gracious gift of salvation. God, help me hold dearly to the greatest gift you've given me--YOURSELF. Help me give thanks in it all today, because You are always up to something good!

We've been singing "Ever Be" around the house and at church lately (or as Anna calls it "Never Be"). Let's sing it out to our faithful God today!
